Linking Accounts and Understanding Synced Data

Written by Taylor Stewart

Account aggregation brings supported institution balances, holdings, and transactions into a household. Clients authorize new connections through Plaid where linking is available. Advisors review account matches and saved data before relying on them in planning.

How do I link bank accounts if I don't see Link Account?

A signed-in client opens the profile menu's Connections page and selects Link an institution when available. Older instructions referring to Link Account or Linked Accounts may describe a previous connection flow.

The client completes these steps; advisors don’t use a client’s login:

  1. The client signs in to their own portal.

  2. The client opens the profile menu and chooses Connections.

  3. The client selects Link an institution, finds their institution, and completes its authentication, consent, and security prompts.

  4. The client returns to Kerdora and reviews the accounts found before adding them to the plan.

Guided Onboarding also provides a Link accounts step. Clients whose Accounts page shows Open Connections can use that route when a connection needs attention.

Advisors open Profile → Accounts → Connections to inspect connections. An advisor can't authenticate through Plaid on the client's behalf.

If a client doesn't have a linking action, check any switch-to-Plaid notice and contact Support about availability. Don't collect institution passwords or security codes.

Where can a client start linking a bank or investment account?

A client can start a connection from Accounts in the portal, as well as from Connections. The client authorizes the institution login; the advisor reviews the returned accounts when needed.

  1. In the portal, open Accounts → Add account → Link through your bank.

  2. Complete the institution's connection steps. After a successful connection, Kerdora opens Connections.

  3. On the institution's card, select Review accounts, or the numbered review button, when shown. Match each returned account to an existing household record, choose Add as new, or select Let my advisor review.

A client viewing an unlinked account's detail page can also select Link bank. Starting there doesn't automatically match the returned account to that record; check the matching choice in Connections. An empty Recent transactions area can offer Link through your bank too.

If Add account opens Account type directly, linking isn't available for this client; choose an account type to enter it by hand. When both choices appear, Enter it yourself is the manual-entry path. Contact Kerdora Support about linking availability.

Does the advisor have to enable account aggregation?

No. There’s no advisor setting to enable Plaid linking; Kerdora controls availability for each advisor’s clients. On Profile → Accounts → Connections, advisors select Invite client to link to prepare personal portal access.

If a signed-in client’s Connections page has no Link an institution button, contact Kerdora Support. Linking may not be enabled for that advisor, or older MoneyKit connections or data may block a new Plaid link.

“Troubleshooting Linked Accounts” covers switching or removing older connections. Copying an invitation doesn’t authorize an account or guarantee institution support.

“Inviting a Client to the Portal” covers personal invitations for existing households. Send each adult their own link and use their existing household, rather than creating a new household just to link accounts.

Advisors can review account decisions and connection status. Only clients can start new Plaid authentication, Reconnect, or Add new accounts. If the account holder can't complete an available connection, use current documents or reviewed manual records while Support investigates.

How should clients review the accounts found by Plaid?

In Connections or Guided Onboarding, clients decide how each returned account belongs in the household before selecting Save and continue.

  1. Compare the institution account's name, ending, type, and balance with existing Kerdora records.

  2. Select the matching record under Suggested match or Other accounts you've entered when it is the same account.

  3. Choose Add as new only for an account not already recorded. Choose Skip to leave it out.

  4. Choose Let my advisor review when uncertain, or Let my advisor review all to defer the included accounts. Skipped accounts remain skipped.

  5. Select Save and continue.

Matching an existing investment account replaces its initial holdings with the connected holdings, so check the destination before saving. An account already fed by another active connection may not be offered as a match; skip an overlapping joint account instead of creating another copy.

Deferred accounts show Awaiting advisor review and don't become plan records until resolved. Some confirmed accounts wait for initial history before appearing.

How does the advisor finish account review?

An advisor opens Profile → Accounts → Connections and selects the institution’s review action to resolve outstanding accounts. It reads Review accounts before an initial review is saved, or Review 1 account, Review 2 accounts, and so on when accounts still await review afterward.

  1. Open the review and compare each returned account with current assets and debts.

  2. Choose an existing record, Create new account, or Skip for each account.

  3. Check the investment-holdings replacement warning and account matches.

  4. Select Confirm & Sync.

  5. Check the institution status, then verify the resulting records in Profile Accounts.

Confirmation can start initial data import; it doesn't guarantee that every balance, holding, or transaction is available immediately. Avoid creating a manual duplicate while an account is importing.

New eligible accounts can receive a default Goal assignment when there is one matching Goal. Matching an existing account keeps its existing assignment. Review Goal funding yourself; automatic assignment isn't guaranteed for every account, and a connection doesn't decide the household's planning priorities.

Can spouses link separate logins at the same institution?

Each spouse can use their own client portal login to connect their institution login from Connections. A second login with at least one new account isn't rejected merely because it also contains an overlapping joint account.

Review every account returned by the second login. Skip a joint account that is already connected; match an existing unlinked record when it is the same account; use Add as new only for genuinely new accounts. Save the review after checking names, endings, types, and balances.

If every returned account matches 1 existing connection at the same institution, Kerdora discards the new connection and shows “These accounts are already linked for this client, so the new connection was discarded.” This check doesn’t merge all overlapping accounts automatically. If that message appears even though the login includes an unlinked account, contact Support with the institution, account endings, and exact message. Don't delete the first connection just to retry the second.

What data should appear after linking?

In Profile → Accounts, linked records can receive institution details and balances. Supported investments can provide holdings, and supported accounts can provide transactions for Spending.

To verify the data as an advisor:

  1. Open Profile → Accounts and confirm each record, balance, owner, and account type.

  2. Open Planning → Investments to check available holdings.

  3. Open Planning → Spending to check transactions and the account/date filters.

  4. Review Goal funding and any planning inputs the connection didn't supply.

Clients use Accounts, Investments, and Spending in their portal. Data coverage and history vary by institution and account; a linked balance doesn't prove that holdings or all historical transactions were delivered.

Aggregation doesn't place trades, transfer money, select target portfolios, or complete insurance, estate, and other planning assumptions. Use reviewed documents or manual facts for gaps, keeping one record for each real account.

How do linked holdings and account balances stay current?

In Profile Accounts, connected bank and debt balances can update from institution data; investment accounts can be valued from their holdings.

The first connected holdings import replaces the destination investment account's holdings. Later Plaid updates apply changes to supplied holdings. Don't assume that every sync resets every manual correction, or add a second set of manual positions just to force a total to match.

Compare the holdings and valuation dates with the institution's statement when an investment total differs. A recent balance check can coexist with incomplete or older holdings. “Troubleshooting Linked Accounts” explains how to trace that mismatch.

Available transactions arrive separately and can feed Spending. Importing a statement over the same account and dates can create overlap; inspect existing activity before another import. A successful connection doesn't promise complete transaction history or identical timing across all data types.

How do I know when a connection was last updated?

In Profile → Accounts → Connections, expand the institution to inspect its accounts and sync information. Clients reach the institution from the profile menu's Connections page.

For a household summary, advisors can select the connection-status button on Office → Home. In Profile Accounts, hover over or select an account’s icon for details, including when a linked connection last updated. Accounts without a Plaid connection show a category icon instead of an institution logo.

Some account rows show Needs attention; see Troubleshooting Linked Accounts for what that label covers.

The heading can show “Balances checked” with a relative time. That is the newest balance retrieval among the connection's shared accounts; it isn't proof that each account or every data type refreshed at that moment. Advisors also see separate Transactions, Holdings, and Investment activity information in the expanded card.

Needs review means account decisions remain. Importing history means initial data is still arriving.

Needs reconnecting, Consent expiring, or Access revoked requires the account holder's attention. Connected describes connection state, without certifying that every value matches today's institution website.

Current Plaid cards don't provide a universal manual Refresh or per-account Unlink account action. Follow the action actually shown, and contact Support if status or values remain unexplained. Older MoneyKit connections appear in a separate switch panel; see Troubleshooting Linked Accounts for missing pre-switch status and the client’s Switch to Plaid steps.

Does a mortgage sync, or does its balance fall automatically each month?

A supported linked mortgage can receive updated balances and available loan details from its institution. A manually entered loan in Profile → Accounts keeps its saved balance until that balance is updated.

Entering an interest rate and payment supports loan calculations; it doesn't post actual monthly payments or automatically reduce today's recorded principal balance. For a manual mortgage, update the balance from a current statement. Don't use a projected future balance as evidence that a real payment occurred.

For a linked mortgage, check connection status and the supplied balance date before relying on the amount. Institution support and permission determine which loan details are available. Review payments, interest rate, and other saved terms separately instead of assuming every field is current because the balance synced.

How do I stop an institution from syncing?

An advisor or client can disconnect a Plaid institution from its expanded Connections card. Disconnecting stops future updates and retains plan accounts, last balances, and imported transactions.

  1. Open the household's Connections view and expand the intended institution.

  2. Select Disconnect.

  3. Read the confirmation and select Disconnect if you intend to stop that institution's feed.

  4. Review its remaining plan records and maintain their balances manually as needed.

Disconnect applies to the institution, not just one selected account, and doesn't delete duplicate plan records. If you need to correct a single account's mapping, ask Support before disconnecting an entire working institution.

Older MoneyKit connections use a separate switch/removal panel. “Troubleshooting Linked Accounts” covers Switch to Plaid, account matching, retained history, and removing an old unsupported connection. Deleting an account record isn't the same as removing its connection.
