Snippets and Template Fields: Reusable Guide Content

Written by Taylor Stewart

Template Fields lets you edit a household's reusable Guide content and inspect earlier values. The template library calls these reusable items Snippets. A snippet holds shared text, an image, or a video link; each household can have its own value for that same snippet.

How do shared snippets and client values work?

A Guide uses the household's saved value when one exists. Otherwise, it uses the snippet's shared content. Changing a household value affects every Guide that uses that snippet for that household, without changing other households.

For example, create a text snippet called Meeting recap. Leave its shared content empty, then write each household's recap in Office Notes. Every Guide using Meeting recap for that household shows the same recap.

For a standard process graphic, upload shared content and leave household values untouched.

A shared-content change reaches households that still use the shared content. It does not replace a household's own copy. An explicitly cleared household value also takes precedence over the shared content; making a field blank is different from returning it to the snippet.

How do I create or edit a shared snippet?

Create snippets from the template library when the content should be reusable. Shared snippet changes save separately from a Guide's layout draft.

  1. Open Templates from the practice sidebar or account menu, then choose Snippets under Guides.

  2. Click New Snippet, enter a name, choose Text, Image, or Video, and click Confirm.

  3. Open the snippet to enter its shared text, upload its default image, or supply a video link.

  4. Pause after typing, then click Done. Reopen the snippet to check the saved content before using it with clients.

Text supports formatting such as bullets, links, and alignment. Video snippets play supported HTTPS links from YouTube, Vimeo, or Loom. Unsupported links or embed code still save, but an error appears in the field and Guide instead of a player.

Uploaded video files aren’t supported.

Images must be JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP files of 10 MB or less. Rejected uploads leave the image unchanged without an error message. Resize or convert the file and try again.

You can also open Edit this snippet from a snippet block's settings. That edits the reusable snippet, even when you reached it while working on a household's Guide. For a household-specific change, use Office Notes or edit text or images on that household’s Guides page.

How do I put a snippet in a Guide?

In the Guide layout editor, add a saved snippet or a Text Snippet, Image Snippet, or Video Snippet block. Creating the reusable item alone does not place it in any Guide.

  1. Open the Guide layout editor and choose Add.

  2. Under Snippets, click a saved snippet to insert its linked block without a prompt. Or add a Text Snippet, Image Snippet, or Video Snippet component and choose Use a saved snippet or New snippet when prompted.

  3. To change an existing block's source, select the block and use its snippet selector. You can choose + New snippet… to create another reusable item.

  4. Check the heading and placement, then finish the layout save workflow in Creating and Editing Guide Templates.

The block's heading normally follows the snippet's name. Typing a different heading makes that heading specific to the block. Use the snippet name reconnects it to the reusable name.

Text and Image are separate choices for content that belongs only to a household's Guide. They do not create reusable snippet definitions in the Template Fields panel. New Image block uploads are stored privately with the household's files; clients can still see them in a shared Guide. GIF and WebP uploads are converted to PNG. Older Image block pictures remain in their original storage. These changes do not apply to Image Snippets.

How do I edit one household's field values?

On a household's Office → Notes page, Template Fields edits text, images, and video links without changing the Guide layout. The panel includes reusable fields even when they aren't placed in this household's Guide.

  1. Open the household, choose Office, then Notes.

  2. Find the field by name under Text Fields, Video Fields, or Image Fields.

  3. Edit its text or Client video link, or select Click to upload image or Click to change image.

  4. Open a Guide using that snippet and check the result.

Images must be JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP files of 10 MB or less. A rejected upload leaves the image unchanged without an error message; resize or convert it and try again.

On a household's Guides page, advisor edits to Text Snippets and Image Snippets also save household values immediately; they don't wait for layout publication or change the shared snippet. Type into the text or click the image upload/change control. Video Snippet links are edited in Office Notes; the layout canvas doesn't allow direct content editing.

A household value stops following shared content until reset with Use the snippet text or Use the snippet image in the Guide editor. Discarding a layout draft doesn't undo field edits. If Office Notes shows No template fields yet, select Go to guide fields to create a reusable snippet.

How do I return a household to the shared content?

Use the snippet reset in the household's Guide editor. Deleting the text inside a household field leaves a household value in place; it does not restore the shared content.

  1. Open the household's Guide editor and select the snippet block.

  2. Look for “Changed for this client” in the settings panel.

  3. Click Use the snippet text, Use the snippet image, or Use the snippet video, as appropriate.

  4. Check that the shared content now appears.

The reset removes that household's own value for the snippet. Other Guides using the same snippet for that household also return to its shared content. This is a live content change, separate from saving the layout.

If the shared snippet is empty, the household will have no content for that field until you add some.

How do I see a field's previous values?

Click View History on a field in the household's Office Notes panel. The history shows prior household values, newest first, with a timestamp. Text appears as formatted text, images as images, and video values as video previews.

The newest stored value is excluded from the list; normally, that is the field’s current value. After returning to shared content, the removed household value is still the newest history entry, so it remains hidden. The button is disabled until the field has more than one stored history entry.

History covers household value edits; it is not a version list for the shared snippet, its name, or the Guide layout.

Edits less than 30 seconds apart replace the latest history entry. After a pause of at least 30 seconds, the next edit starts another entry. A series of edits with short gaps can therefore remain one entry for longer than 30 seconds.

There is no restore button in the history window. To reuse earlier wording, enter it again in the current field. Returning to shared content removes the household override without adding a new value-history entry.

Why do my Guide custom fields look different after saving?

Check that you are comparing the same snippet, household, and display context before changing the content. A template preview shows shared snippet content; the household's Guide uses its own saved value when one exists. Those can legitimately contain different text or images.

  1. Open the household's Office, then Notes, and compare the current field value with the Guide.

  2. In the Guide editor, select the block and verify its snippet selection. Check for “Changed for this client.”

  3. Check whether the heading follows the snippet name or has its own wording.

  4. If the content matches but the appearance differs, compare the block's style settings and the shared component design. Creating and Editing Guide Templates explains those controls.

  5. Reopen the saved Guide to confirm the result you want clients to see.

If the difference persists, contact Kerdora Support with the Guide name, snippet name, where you edited it, and screenshots of the two appearances.

Can clients see or edit snippet content in a Guide?

On My plan, clients can currently edit Text Snippets and replace Image Snippets in available Guides. Each edit saves a household value used by every Guide with that snippet for the same household; the shared snippet stays unchanged.

Client edits are recorded in household field history, subject to the same grouping and newest-entry exclusion as advisor edits. To return a household to shared content, the advisor selects the snippet in the household's Guide editor and uses Use the snippet text or Use the snippet image. Office Notes is an advisor workspace; clients don't get a Video Snippet link editor on My plan.

Clients can also edit one-off Text and Image blocks and dates when those blocks are present. These save household values too. Financial Objective, Values, Overview Goals, and Concerns blocks are read-only for clients, including in the built-in Overview layout shown when no default Guide is set. The client interface doesn't offer the advisor's layout editor.

For advisor explanation clients should only read, use a client-visible General Note or Plan Note and check its source visibility. Delivering a Guide to a Client covers other interactions. Review the intended household's Guide before delivery because a shared-template preview doesn't show every household's saved values.

What happens if I delete a snippet?

Deleting a snippet removes the reusable definition. Blocks that reference it show “Snippet deleted” until you choose another snippet. Removing a block from one Guide is different: it leaves the snippet available for reuse.

  1. Open the snippet from Templates, then Snippets.

  2. Review Where it's used. This list identifies placements in reusable templates; it is not a complete list of household-specific Guides.

  3. Click the trash icon and confirm the deletion only if you intend to remove the shared item.

  4. For any affected Guide, edit the block and select a replacement snippet, or remove the block and save the layout.

Deletion has no undo control. Check household-specific Guides as well as the listed templates before deleting a snippet that may still be in use.
