Importing a Client's Tax Return

Written by Taylor Stewart

Open Planning → Taxes → Returns to add a client tax-return PDF, review the forms Kerdora extracted, and create a tax scenario from supported return values. A return import creates a planning source and scenario; it does not file or amend a return.

How do I add a return?

  1. Open the client and go to Planning → Taxes → Returns.

  2. Select New Return.

  3. Choose Upload PDF to add a new file or Existing Document to use a PDF already stored under Documents.

  4. For Upload PDF, drop the PDF or select it from your computer. Enter the PDF password if Kerdora prompts for one.

  5. For Existing Document, open the applicable folder, select the PDF, and choose Confirm.

  6. Confirm the return appears in the Returns list and extraction begins.

Tax-return import accepts PDF files. Use the complete, readable return package when possible. A direct export from tax software is easier to extract than a low-quality rescan.

What do the extraction statuses mean?

The Returns list and return detail display the current status.

  • PROCESSING means Kerdora is identifying the package and its forms.

  • EXTRACTING or EXTRACTING FIELDS means supported forms are being read.

  • COMPLETED means the return has at least finished the extraction workflow; review the forms before using the result.

  • FAILED means the import did not complete.

Inside the return, the Forms rail lists identified federal forms and each form's status. Waiting for form identification means that list is not ready yet.

If extraction fails, verify the PDF opens, supply or remove password protection as needed, and retry with a clearer source. Contact Support after a repeatable failure and include the client, filename, time, status, and a safe screenshot.

How do I review the extracted return?

  1. Select the return from the Returns list.

  2. Review the taxpayer names, tax year, source document, and overall status.

  3. Select each form in the Forms rail.

  4. Compare the extracted fields with the matching return pages.

  5. Note unsupported or incomplete forms that require manual scenario inputs.

Kerdora can identify and extract supported federal forms and schedules available in the package. Do not assume every form, worksheet, state return, or tax-software calculation is modeled.

How do I create a tax scenario from the return?

  1. Wait until the return status is COMPLETED and Create scenario becomes available.

  2. Select Create scenario on the return detail page. You can also open Scenarios, select the + menu, and choose the return under From extracted returns.

  3. Review the taxpayer and spouse matches to the household.

  4. Select the correct existing adult, or use the available add-person option only when the person genuinely is missing.

  5. Confirm the creation and wait for the new scenario to open under Inputs.

  6. Review the scenario's filing status, state, dependents, income, deductions, credits, payments, and other imported fields.

  7. Open 1040 Review and compare supported lines with the source return.

The new scenario remains separate from the client's Profile data. Adding a missing household person during entity matching is the exception and should be reviewed carefully.

What should I do with missing or unexpected values?

Return to the source form and confirm whether Kerdora supports that form and field. Enter a manual scenario input when the planning model needs a fact that was not extracted. Do not edit unrelated Profile records merely to force the imported scenario to match.

Use the imported scenario as a prior-year or filed-return reference, then copy it or create a current-year baseline before modeling a new strategy when the years differ.
